Newspaper & Branding Design
BACKGROUND : According to research, global temperatures can have a direct affect on our Mental Health and neurological conditions such as Epilepsy and Strokes. This important issue was omitted from the UN’s COP26 Summit, but we wanted to highlight it anyways.
THE IDEA : To produce a carbon neutral/negative newspaper made from algae, full of articles from the leading voices in the fields on THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON OUR MINDS.
The EnvironMental Issue Newspaper was the first newspaper to clean air and help raise awareness for people with neurological conditions. As an epileptic sufferer myself, I saw this as a passion project.
Myself and my team of designers produced a newspaper using algae ink; it was printed on Mohawk recycle paper, with pulp sourced from sustainable forests, and manufactured using electricity generated buy wind power. The overall carbon impact of the project has the long-term equivalent of removing 15 tonnes of C02 from the atmosphere.
I designed the layouts, branding for the masthead and set the overall design style for the project, whilst overseeing any design amends and changes made by my team.
RESULTS: The newspaper was eventually distributed around Scotland during the COP26 summit, raising awareness on the issue in print and online. The project was awarded Best Campaign of COP26 by PR Week. It was rated in the the 15 PR Campaigns of 2021 by Brand Republic. The news coverage spanned such institutes as BBC Radio, BBC Parliament, The Drum and The Herald Newspaper. It also helped raise awareness at UK Prime Minister’s Question time with Boris Johnson responding.
Since the launch, the project has won numerous industry accolades for both idea, campaign and design.
